As I've said before in other reviews, being trippy and having a good soundtrack just isn't enough, and this is one of those movies that thinks it is. The love story is just average (though the two leads give likable performances) and overall the movie just doesn't really go anywhere.
But it is The Beatles, so you can only go so far with the criticisms.
