Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Nathaniel S — 22 May 2012
Truly an underrated effort. This film is really like playing your favorite album over again it's that infectious. The character are for one engaging, though there are instances where certain characters like Sadie and JoJo fade into the background. Max brings the most entertainment in terms of characters and it is not difficult to see why. Yet despite this he becomes more minimal as the film goes on and it focuses on the romance between Jude and Lucy. Sturgess and Wood deliver a fine performance and their love story is believable and endearing. Each song is crafted well and Taymor is wise to choose some of the Beatles lesser known songs. Though lesser known they manage to advance the plot and they us know what the characters are thinking when words are not enough. The only problem with this film would be the dreadful covering of Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite and I am the Walrus. There was seemingly no point. Yes it is the 60s, but were the drug induced scenes essential no. They landed in the middle of no where how did they manage to get back.
A strong film that hopefully becomes more valued in the future.
