Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Ashlyn D — 05 Feb 2016
It's an audacious musical, and I can understand why some people, especially the fans of the Beatles, absolutely adore this trippy, colorful mess of a film. It has some entertaining moments (the Strawberry Fields Forever sequence is hauntingly effective), the cast is quite appealing (Sturgess being the best of the bunch) and I commend director Julie Taymor for her immensely creative vision.
However, the central story is cliched and as a hardcore fan of the Beatles, I will never forgive the way it butchered some of the songs. Across the Universe is admirable, but not a great film.
