Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Musicallover — 24 Oct 2007
First the basics- my friend and I (both late forties) left this movie pumped and happy. To us it was well worth the price of admission and the time. Usually I'm all for rich dialogue and complex storytelling but movie musicals are in a class by themselves.
Those're often more experience than story, and this film is no exception. The voices range from pleasing to powerful, and the song renderings are heartfelt, making most of the individual situations believable (however improbable the whole).
The visuals are compelling and beautiful, and in some cases stunning. The Beatles are never mentioned and as far as this movie is concerned they aren't relevant except for their wonderfully evocative and layered lyrics that enable the characters to say so much even when they're using very few words.
