Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Brian K — 13 Apr 2013
'Across the Universe' is a simplistic love story told in a complex way. Using Beatles music and beautiful visual imagery, the film is one of the year's best so far. Julie Taymor, the creative power behind 'The Lion King' brings us the story of Jude (Jim Sturgess), a young lad working to feed his mother and himself in Great Britain.
Venturing out to find his father, he travels to America and finds a potsmoking party boy (Joe Anderson) instead. But, what he really finds in America is Lucy(Evan Rachel Wood) of whom he falls in love.
That's all the story there is, and quite frankly, that's all the story we need, for the visual splendor and musicality of the movie far exceeds the need for a coherent story. Any subject can be done well, and this one is incredible.
There is one short coming to the movie, and that is a scene of Eddie Izzard singing 'Mr. Kite.' A horrible choice of a song, horrendously sung, though visually stunning. This scene should have been cut, but other than that, this is truly a touching artistic vision.
