Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Matt F — 16 Sep 2011
The idea of telling a 60s-revolution-era love story through the music of the Fab Four is one hell of a premise, but sadly, it doesn't turn into a very good finished product. Some of the musical numbers are impressively staged (my personal favorite being "I Want You/She's So Heavy"), but there are also some song breaks that feel like they were added only to appease the mob of Beatles fans that would see this film ("Come Together" is one such WTF moment).
As an added detractor, both leads, who are normally charismatic actors, turn in uninspired performances to send this movie into a lull. Skip this one.
