Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Hunter O — 17 Dec 2011
I'm neither a Beatles' fan, nor a musical freak, so I had no idea what I was getting into. Even though the beginning was nothing new and rather a cliche, I enjoyed it very much and all in all I preferred the 'cheesiness' of the opening, exposition and first act rather than the bizarreness of the second half, not only cinematic, but also plot-wise. (I mean the hippie-bus and the crazed out circus... what was that about?). I'd have liked it more if they had stuck to reality a bit more and that's saying something, coming from me.
Mixing the script with songs is a smooth move, I liked it, although I only knew about three songs from the entire soundtrack. As mentioned though, I have no profound background knowledge on the Beatles and no interest in them either.
The cast were all pretty damn good singers. Jim Sturgess, Dana Fuchs and Martin Luther had incredible voices and made it a bit difficult for Evan Rachel Wood, Joe Anderson and T.V. Carpio to follow.
An average musical that does explore dream-like spaces (reminded me of Mirrormask in some scenes), but all in all very insignificant.
