Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Haley H — 02 Sep 2013
As an avid Beatles lover and movie-seer, I thoroughly enjoyed Across the Universe. Set in the time period of the famous band, the movie deals with many of the important conflicts of the 60's: Civil Rights protests and drafting for the Vietnam War.
I must begin by saying if you do not enjoy films that describe parts of the plot through song and dance, this movie is NOT for you. However, I love when movies can balance song numbers with a plot and have it (kind of) make sense.
The movie is extremely vivacious and extravagant, and something straight out of Julie Taymor's vast imagination. However, if you look past the glits and glam of Across the Universe, the plot is somewhat weak.
There are many stories and characters that are supposed to intertwine, but in the end the scattered focus almost detracts from the movie. I love the side-plots, but there are so many ideas fighting for their way on top that the story becomes an unfinished quilt.
The time spent drafting these other characters could have been better used to make the central romance original. What the romance lacks in substance, the actors make up in their songs. From Let It Be's beautiful voices and haunting story, to Hold Me Tight's jazzy rhythms and juxtaposing images, the classic songs are done justice.
Basically, if you are looking for a fun romantic musical with songs you can sing along to Across the Universe will do the job with flying colors. You'll enjoy it too.
