Review of Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) by Johnny T — 08 Jan 2012
Director Steve Oedekerk, who also wrote the script, simply provides a frame for the string of Carrey sight gags, which come fast and constantly. Some work, some fall flat, but the overall momentum is never allowed to flag seriously. Carrey is in top form here, giving a wildly confident, physically draining performance with all the stops pulled out. A little bit of Carrey goes a long, long way--and this Ace Ventura comedy goes on for too, too long. But, like Jerry Lewis, and, to a degree, Steve Martin, Carrey can make the idiotic seem inspired, and his manic mugging creates some big laughs. Carrey tries hard but the success of his excessiveness has always been down to pegging it to good plots and good partners.
VERDICT: "In The Zone" - [Mixed Reaction] These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says buy an ex-rental or a cheap price of the DVD to own. If you consider cinema, ask for people's opinion on the film. (Films that are rated 2.5 or 3 stars).
