Review of Accepted (2006) by Jon W — 16 May 2009
The only real dent you could put into this film would be to say that it's highly, highly, unrealistic. In fact, it's nigh impossible for something like this to have ever happened in real life. But as someone who doesn't begrudge films for unrealistic premises (nor should anyone), I found this film to be highly entertaining and oddly revealing.
Of course, as a comedy, everything is worked up to extremes. The stodgy, tradition-based prep school was about as stodgy and tradition-based as you can get. But this is a comedy (and a teen comedy at that).
Subtlety is not, shall we say, expected. Accepted pits 2 very different ideas of "college" against one another. And while most real life colleges are somewhere in between, you have to give this film credit for trying to point out that we while the pursuit of knowledge is all good and well, practical application SHOULD have a place in academia.
As a teen comedy, Accepted would, of course, take this to the extreme (otherwise it wouldn't be FUNNY and then people would find it boring and then it wouldn't sell...), but the fundamental point is there.
And people overlook Bartleby's speech in the courtroom because the whole situation is just so damn unrealistic. But that doesn't make his speech invalid. Ya hear?
