Review of Accepted (2006) by Mark R — 12 Feb 2011
I really like this movie. I think that one of the statements made by Van Horn at the hearing is so indicative of the attitude too many in academia have..."students can't be teachers". I beg to differ.
I have seen students accomplish amazing things because they set their mind to accomplishing them. How many people spend four years at college, going into debt for the rest of their lives, only to get a degree that doesn't get them anywhere? I know journalism majors who ended up selling jewelry, psych majors who ended up doing computer programs for retail and so on.
This movie really does make a serious point. We are so insistent that America can not be beat for innovation...yet, far too many "halls of learning" stifle creativity, innovation and free thought.
I would love to attend a place like South Harmon to explore those things I have always wanted to do. I think many people would. As for students being unable to be teachers...I have learned more about my subject from my students over the 22 years I have been teaching than I ever learned in my college courses.
They see things from a perspective that college professors never could and they have made me a far better teacher for it. THAT'S why I like this movie.
