Review of Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016) by Junelkean — 08 Jan 2018
As someone who is not familiar with Absolutely Fabulous: the TV show, this movie is somehow being sold as the mother of all chick flicks. We have a sparkling title, sophisticated accents and label-obsessed fashionistas (Saunders & Lumley), who have now started to fall down the stairs and become broken middle-aged losers.
The insane chemistry between the two main stars absolutely dazzles with glitters and sparkles, but the substance of the plot does not make any sense. It is confusingly hard to follow at the beginning, and there are cohesion issues with the screenplay.
There are plenty of cameo appearances by famous British celebrities and fashion icons, who mostly does not produce any significant and desirable effects. Also, most of the jokes do not hit and give real laughs, especially if someone is not familiar with British culture and fashion. But the British humor is there, so it works as a treat.
VERDICT: Saunders and Lumley's sparkling and shining chemistry show outlandish British humor, without hitting any solid scores to the guts.
