Review of Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016) by Movie M — 02 Feb 2017
I first have to prefaces this review by saying that I am 100% not familiar with the "Absolutely Fabulous" TV series, nor did I know absolutely anything about the series going in. I went into this movie with the expectations of it being a decent enough comedy to keep me - someone who isn't part of the fanbase, entertained throughout.
And while I could tell where the inside jokes and references were thrown out, I couldn't understand them, and without the general comedy, this movie did not leave me as satisfied as I was hoping. The overall plot of the movie is semi-decent, two women kill Kate Moss, have to leave the country to cover it up, while also trying to preserve their youth.
That was literally the entire movie wrapped up in one sentence. It had very little beyond the one layered, sometimes not even funny jokes it threw out, and tried to be sensual in areas where it just didn't fit.
I won't say it was an absolute disaster, as there were some elements that brought the movie back up, such as Julia Sawalha (Saffy), who I thought was a pretty interesting character that maybe should have been a bit more involved in the film.
Overall, I can't say I was interested in what "Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie" brought to the table, the comedy was pretty bleak, however I could see die hard fans of the TV show understanding the references, and enjoying the movie a bit more.
"Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie", however, is not worth watching.
