Review of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) by Nate 2 — 01 Jun 2013
I'm not confused as to why I was let down by this: The film took itself way too seriously. With a premise this wildly insane, the best thing to do is take a lighthearted approach. Now, that's not to say you can't go dark with it.
2013's Hansel and Great: Witch Hunters went dark and jokey, and I seriously enjoyed that. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter follows Abraham Lincoln's rise to presidency, but through a way that history hasn't taught us.
It's a goofy premise that could've been fun, but even the actors involved seemed to have missed the fun memo. Benjamin Walker as Abraham Lincoln brings little to no charisma in the role, which is a shame when he's paired with Anthony Mackie.
Everyone else tries hard, but just a little too hard. Visually, there are some nice effects and pretty good production values and sets. The action is also pretty good. However, the leap of faith this film asks us to take is taken too seriously for me to enjoy the ride, which I wanted to.
