Review of Above the Law (1988) by Hunter D — 21 May 2008
Seagal's debut (as a lead man no less...impressive!) shows a lot of promise, with Andrew Davis' competent eye behind the camera leading the way. It's easy to see why Seagal was seen as the next big thing at the time, in that he's quick as lightning and he's cool as a cucumber throughout.
The man has presence here, and like Bruce Lee, he seems interested in putting his own fortune-cookie philosophies into his movies (although Lee's is infinately more interesting). Too bad his later work would prove that he has the acting range of pocket knife.
This movie specifically ain't bad for an 80's action flick, it's not terribly remarkable in that it's full of stuff you've seen before, but it's certainly worth sitting through.
