Review of Above the Law (1988) by Andy D — 24 Mar 2009
This is undoubtedly Segals best film. After this he made another 3 decent movies: Marked for Death, Out for Justice and Hard to Kill.
If you like action films, you NEED to have this as part of your collection. Its certainly a change from your traditional type of 80's action film. Yes, it is far fetched and over the top but not as much as other 80's action films.
Nico has a 6 Degree black belt in Aikido. Watching young Segal fight is beautiful. The fight scenes are choreographed so masterfully and they look surprisingly realistic and believable (unlike his most recent action films.... and any Jackie Chan film).
There are a few scenes that stand out: The one where he is ambushed by 4 guys and they all have machetes, "You've come to fuck wit our people, now were gonna fuck wit you!" Anyway, with his expert aikido skills he kills three of them and the last guy runs off screaming.... its funny.
The other scene which comes to mind, is at the end: He is captured by the 'big bad boss' and his 'goons'. Anyway, he manages to break free and kill the goons. The boss comes after him with a knife and he snaps his arm in half and then breaks his neck.... pretty graphic, yet pretty awesome.
They don't make films of this caliber anymore. I really enjoyed it. Segal proves himself as an action star in this film.
I recommend you see it if you haven't already.
