Review of About Time (2013) by Peter A — 26 Mar 2014
Severely underrated this funny, sad, thoughtful film is a must-watch with the ultimate lesson of living each day with intense appreciation of life itself. One to sit back, relax and not over-think as there are a few plot holes.
Lovely to see Margot Robbie whose English accent fits a lot more comfortably than her Brooklyn drawl in Wolf of Wall Street. Bill Nighy demonstrates that he can portray subtle deep emotion )n that stiff-upper lip way and Domhnall Gleeson's foppish lead is miles apart from his Dublin Irish background and portrayal of Bob Geldorf = very believable.
This movie played very strongly in Australia - much better than in the UK - probably because we are very comfortable with the egalitarian reverse aristocracy endemic here, whereas our English forefathers I think would have squirmed with the discomfort of seeing their class system lampooned in this way.
Rachel McAdams is very watchable as every boy's dream of the bespectacled girl next door type - cute and lovable. Lindsay Duncan is warmly snooty as the long-suffering mum and Lydia Wilson plays the hippy-out-of-time flibbertigibbet that every family has one of.
Well rounded with the resident Alzheimer's uncle nicely underplayed by Richard Cordery. All together a rich tapestry of real life with a comic-sad difference that appeals at multiple levels. Satisfying for the soul.
