Review of About Time (2013) by Tyler Q — 03 May 2014
One of the most touching and well executed movies I have ever seen. I came in expecting another generic "guy chases girl" romantic comedy-drama with a twist of time traveling mixed in. Instead, this evolved into a film exploring the importance of family, choices, and happiness in one's life.
Domhnall Gleeson was an unconventional but surprisingly relatable male lead who really did an excellent job in conveying his character's maturation and struggles, and his chemistry onscreen with Rachel McAdams seemed very genuine and not overly done.
The scenes with Bill Nighy (who plays the father) and Gleeson were some of the most powerful and insightful scenes in the entire movie. I really believe this is one of Bill Curtis's best work and one of the best movies of 2013, and I actually enjoyed the third act of this movie more than "Her".
While the movies overarching themes weren't as original or creative as "Her", the execution and focus of every scene in the last third of the film was almost perfect. The only downfall of this movie was its more awkward, generic plot development and ill-defined characters in the opening third of the movie, but this drawback really takes a backseat to how great the rest of the movie is.
About Time may well be the two most purely pleasurable hours I've spent in the cinema all year.
