Review of About Time (2013) by Mike C — 09 Jun 2014
Solid. I happen to love Love Actually and this is the same director or writers or whatever, so some of that talent carries over. Time travel movies have to be among the most difficult to write. It if take this one at face value it's pretty enjoyable.
I am still very impressed with The Time Traveler's Wife...I own it and need to rewatch it to see exactly why I was so impressed. But this one is cute. I don't think it works as hard to keep out the plot holes, but it's cute enough to look over them or excuse them.
I thought the characters were just great. Kit Kat (the sister) is so goddamn adorable. Hughes, I thought, was solid as lead male. McAdams is always at least average, and Nighy was quite effective as the dad. Another great character is the uncle. He doesn't say much but sure as heck delivers a great line late in the movie.
Couple things without trying to spoil: There is one time change and I thought maybe the end of the movie was nearing. It would have been a very big sacrifice and I think it would have been powerful. And the win-win...he's got Margot friggin Robbie inviting him in. He can go back to McAdams and whatever happens happens, but if things go awry, he can always go back to that doorway with Margot friggin Robbie. You can't lose there.
