Review of About Time (2013) by Mloy X — 18 Jul 2014
Kit Kat (Lydia Wilson): Maybe, just maybe, I'm the faller. every family has someone who falls, who doesn't make the grade, who stumbles, who life trips up. Maybe I'm our faller.
The first time I saw the trailer for this film, I knew I would like it, but often times the trailer surpasses the actual film. Fortunately, this was not one of those films. Initially, this just seemed like the usual rom-com with a bit of the time traveling twist but it turns out to be much, much more. I have definitely fallen in-love with Richard Curtis' style of directing. "Love Actually" is and has remained one of my most favorite films of all time and I think this film is my 2nd "Love Actually"; I have never fallen in-love with a film so fast and so hard. I am completely sold. First, the was definitely a heart-tugging-tear-jerker-laugh-out-loud roller coaster ride. Every single person in this film was brilliant-- not a boring character in the lot. I initially wanted to see this because of Bill Nighy because he is just so bloody brilliant-- I love him! Domhall Gleeson was awesome, he was just too adorably awkward enough and dory-cute that the role seemed tailor made for him and Rachel McAdams, who is getting typecast in these roles, had beautiful on-screen chemistry with Gleeson that it would be difficult to imagine anyone else in the role. She was just too charming. It always a pleasant surprise to watch favorite familiar faces pop up in films: Tom Hollander whom I adore from the Kiera Knightley "Pride & Prejudice" film and from "Pirates of the Caribbean" and Margot Robbie (who played Laura Cameron from the t.v. series "Pan Am"). Also, I award extra brownie points whenever a film has actors who've appeared in Harry Potter: Domhnall Gleeson (as Bill Weasley), Bill Nighy (as Minister Rufus Scrimgeour) and of course, Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon).
The brilliant thing about "Love Actually is how well all the intertwining subplots weave together to make one coherent film, this film did that beautifully as well-- not a single insignificant plot in the entire film-- it was absolute perfection!!! I cannot gush enough about this film, my heart still aches at how poignant this film is and how wonderfully touching the message was. It's just absolutely, positively one of the best films I've seen in a long while. I absolutely love(d) it.
