Review of About Time (2013) by Jonathan B — 02 Aug 2014
About Time features time travel, a rather unconventional and at times ingenious usage too, but it's not about that, it's about love. There's the central love story between Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams, and then there's the father-son relationship between Gleeson and the great Bill Nighy.
The thing I greatly appreciated is the point where most movies would end, at the "happy, rom-com ending," is only About Time's halfway point, and it uses the rest of the time to expand its themes and explore deeper down-to-earth, real life stuff further.
The relationship between Nighy and Gleeson especially resonates, and that final exchange between them, oh man. Gleeson follows in his father's footsteps, making for another unlikely lead, but does an exceptional job of carrying things with his awkward energy and natural, easygoing charisma.
Admittedly, some of the time travel intricacies are a little muddled, but by and large About Time is a successful navigation on the everyday things between life and death, and the love that ties them all together that makes it worthwhile.
