Review of About Time (2013) by Valerie P — 02 Feb 2015
This film was most definitely my favorite of all the films I watched in 2014. I liked it so much that I gifted it to my best friend for Christmas. I even bought myself a copy, and I so rarely buy DVDs that are not intended for my children these days.
The movie is essentially about a young man who inherits his father's ability to time travel on his 21st birthday. You can imagine that this could lead to a very silly and fanciful film, when in fact, About Time remains completely sincere and unexpectedly moving.
Lead character, Tim, has many lessons to learn - some about the use of time travel, and some about life in general. His aim is to use his newfound power as a means to romance. When Tim meets Mary, his plan becomes less of a desire and more of a need. This is a very unique coming of age tale; clever and warmingly sentimental. Bill Nighy as the father is absolute perfection. I never expected to need a box of tissues for this movie, but it certainly is packed full of surprises.
We truly need more films like this.
