A funny movie with Nicholson giving a heartbreaking performance. It is almost painful to watch him and the setbacks he experiences as he looks for meaning in his life. However, the third act When he arrives at the home of Kathy Bates is pure sitcom territory, hurting the smart human story that came before it.
Only in the last ten or fifteen minutes does it find its footing again.
