To me this is a film about a man who comes to terms with his own delusions about life, and learns that the kindest thing you can do in life is not shatter anyone else's. When Nicholson won the Golden Globe for best actor in a drama, he remarked "I was under the impression we were making a comedy.
" He was right, but only in America do people read comedy of manners as drama.
