Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Layne W — 28 Nov 2008
The tragicomic "About Schmidt" pulsates with sudden, sharp humor, some of which surprisingly and delightfully breaks up the downbeat pace of the film. Still, at its heart, the movie is tragic, and Jack Nicholson, in a performance that strips him of any opportunities for self-parody, is its lonely, insecure tragic hero.
The dark comedy reaches effervescence when Kathy Bates appears as the mother of his soon-to-be son-in-law. She's wacky and irresistible, everything Nicholson's Warren Schmidt is not. We're drawn to Warren because he speaks to all of our fears of insignificance, and that haunting possibility of dying alone.
