Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Brandon Y — 05 Feb 2012
Wonderful, caustic film about inner honesty. After retiring from the position of vice-president of a major insurance company an aged married man, with a daughter, confides his thoughts to a starving orphan in Africa after becoming his 'foster father' for 22 dollars a month.
As he comments on his former job, his wife, his friends, his life and himself, in each subsequent letter he shows remarkable flexibility of principles and convictions. No matter what crimes he commits and how far his statements are from the truth, in the imaginary world of his letters, with a little effort, he never fails to land on all feet and to remain a decent and important man with intact integrity.
With the terrific script full of irony and satire, Jack Nicholson's character couldn't have been played better.
