Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Christopher H — 28 Feb 2012
After a guilt-inducing TV commercial for sponsoring a child in Africa loosens a diarrhea of personal information, Schmidt begins a personal odyssey -- past the death of his loveless old wife, the shrewishness of his daughter, and various other misadventures -- to discover himself.
The result isn't brave, isn't particularly touching, and settles for a lukewarm comedy-drama mix when it might have better achieved comedy alone (probably not drama alone). Most of it exists as just a vehicle for idle, soapy pop-psychology.
