Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Fábio De Carvalho P — 25 Nov 2010
Think 'One Foot In The Grave' but not as funny and with Jack Nicholson as Victor Meldrew, and you're pretty much there. Nicholson as Schmidt is reliably excellent, but has little to play off in the script and at times feels like he is on auto-pilot.
The supporting cast are adequate, although I found Davis irritating in the role of Schmidt's daughter. In terms of pace, this feels plodding at times, and for the last act the plot seemed as though it was crawling desperately towards a conclusion.
A film not without charm, and at times genuinely funny and affecting, but ultimately lacking in anything that kept me truly hooked in.
