Review of About Schmidt (2002) by Jack C — 16 Oct 2013
For starters, absolutely NOT a comedy, as it was advertised to be, it was really a "comedy-drama" film at most. For such a bleak, downcast film, I actually really liked it. I liked the realism of a movie where really, the main character is stuck in his boring, dreary life.
Nicholson is one of my favourite actors of all time, and really showed his diversity in this role of a guy who's just unhappy with his lot. He definitely deserved his Oscar nomination, if not the award itself.
Also, a good job by director/co-writer Alexander Payne, who somehow managed to make every character seem, overall, like a nice person at heart. Some parts were a bit too depressing for me, but other than that, it was an enjoyable film.
