Review of About Last Night (2014) by Vince B — 18 Feb 2014
About Last Night is a romantic comedy that tries to play for some laughs with Kevin Hart being himself again. It does have some funny moments but all the melodramatic tensions do overshadow it.
The story follows a couple Danny (Michael Ealy) and Debbie (Joy Bryant) who have fallen for each other after a one-night stand. They decide to move onto the next step in a relationship and trying to take it seriously. While there relationship is put on the test if they are actually able to make it work.
About Last Night focuses more on romance than being a comedy movie. It is not a bad thing, unless you pick out the predictability of it. I am not sure, if the movie's role of Bernie played by Kevin Hart was specifically written for him or not. Kevin Hart's performance felt repetitive like his other movies. He does have some funny moments but it could not be carried through the whole movie. Unless you love him as an actor, otherwise it was just decent with the performance.
Michael Ealy and Kevins Hart chemistry on screen was fair enough to sit through. Regina Hall and Joy Bryant could have been better, they just provided a dull performances.
Overall, About Last Night is one of those romantic movies with the same clichés and only a few comedic performances from the casts. It also felt like it was dragging on but it's not a terrible film.
