Review of About Last Night (2014) by Byron B — 12 May 2014
This remake offers a lot of fresh laughs and romantic entanglements despite following the original story pretty closely. It even pays tribute with the new Danny and Debbie sitting down to watch Rob Lowe and Demi Moore in a clip from the original as they argue whether it is a guy's or a girl's movie.
I've enjoyed Michael Ealy's performance on the now cancelled TV show Almost Human, and here, as Danny, he again gives a sympathetic performance as a guy who wants to settle down in a mature relationship.
Kevin Hart has seemingly been in everything in the last year, and, as the motor-mouthed Bernie, provides some of the best laughs. I'm not familiar with the ladies, Regina Hall, who plays Joan, and Joy Bryant, who plays Debbie, but they complete the ensemble of two couples navigating the compromises of relationships in the best way possible.
In my mind, this is an improvement over the original.
