Review of About Last Night (2014) by Maksim B — 08 Jun 2014
A lovable and energetic mixture of sweet romance and offending comedy, About Last Night is one of the recent better releases targeting the "date-night" movie going segment. With enough girl-oriented romance, sex-oriented male driven jokes and actors' chemistry, it is a mildly sparking entertainment which ensures that the whole delivery is pleasantly refreshing.
Based on David Mamet 70's play Sexual Perversity in Chicago, Steve Pink's movie is set as an Afro-American comedy starring Kevin Hart and Michael Ealy. Adapted for heavy-weights of the Afro-American comedy genre like them, About Last Night goes wild from the very beginning. Both Hart and Ealy, who happen to be completely different characters, but also best friends, start dating two ladies at the same time. The movie explores how both couples go through the transition from "friends with benefits" to a young couple and a couple with plans for the future.
The story is far from being flawless as it gets repetitative at some moments. In addition to this Danny and Debbie's relationship problems are not really convincing. They seem to be created more as a reason to add up the necessary dramatic load in the movie. Nevertheless, these flaws are partially covered by the energetic love-hate relationship of Kevin Hart with Regina Hall and the best-buddy chemistry between him and Michael Ealy.
Thus, About Last Night finishes as one of those good and refreshing rom-coms, which does just enough to satisfy. Far from being perfect it fulfills its aim to be a good delivery for a date-night, by providing sweet romance and decent laughs. Worth a try if you are looking for a fine romantic comedy.
