Review of About a Boy (2002) by Pascal V — 14 May 2012
This film is about bachelor Hugh Grant, who hopes to stay a bachelor for the rest of his life. He wants to remain "an island" as he puts it. Naturally, his plans get interrupted. A boy stumbles into his life, who's in need of help while dealing with a seriously depressed mother and a school full of kids bullying him.
The story is nicely enacted by (mainly) Hugh Grant, Toni Collette and the boy. The story is however very predictable, as is the cast, but to be honest, I still thought everyone made the best of their parts. There are a few pretty good jokes in About A Boy, and there's just enough developments in the plot to keep you interested.
Overall a pretty entertaining film, suitable for all the family.
