Review of About a Boy (2002) by Shannon P — 14 Apr 2012
"A thinking person's Adam Sandler movie "- you know the immature man befriends pretty mom's tweenie son to meet her, and grows up in the process plotline. What makes it a smart comedy drama is the top notch acting by Hugh Grant and the young man who plays the socially awkard ,shy and sensitive son .
It also never hurts to have a few clever and heart-tugging storylines going on that don't make you feel like your emotions have been manipulated. You'll genuinely care "about 2 boys" as you watch Hugh become the one person (besides mom - who of course thinks so )who supports and encourages the young man and helps him feel secure enough in himself to be true to his talent no matter what the local school bullies think.
You'll be proud of the boys when they become better people and discover how much they have in common- most importantly they each need someone to champion for - and to have champion for them. One person caring and taking a geuine interest while encouraging a talent can make all the difference to someone who might otherwise just put it up on a shelf where it eventually fades away.
The eccentric Indie group ,"Badly Drawn Boy" provides most, if not all of the soundtrack . The DVD I rented included the video to one of the songs, and this video about a widowed duck (!?) was nearly as touching as the film, so be sure to watch it.
I now own all of BDB's albums.
