Review of Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1953) by Jon C — 09 Nov 2017
One of the better Abbott and Costello movies, with Boris Karloff doing his usually classy acting job as a Jekyll/Hyde who, atypically, is evil in both his identities. The slapstick is even more exaggerated than usual, sometimes verging on 3 Stooges territory. The special effects and makeup of the monster transformations, while primitive by current standards, at least aren't ridiculously bad. Perhaps the best aspect of the film is its vivid and credible evocation of Victorian London atmosphere; some of the lighting and camera angles show noir influence. All in all, silly but enjoyable.
The film seems very obscure: I couldn't find it in any of the standard film reference guides I have, though it is in IMDB.
