Review of A-X-L (2018) by Jamie%20 L — 04 Sep 2018
This is the first big film for Director Oliver Daly and A-X-L is a good start for an optimistic career. The movie follows the young up and coming dirt bike racer Miles, played by Alex Neustaedter, and is filled with many of the classic storylines. His father has been by his side through thick and thin, the "bad guy" is the rich kid with good looks and little talent, and very early in the movie Miles falls for the girl that will cause the most problems for him.
After finding a robo-dog named A-X-L, it goes from war machine to pet in no time. Miles is able to repair a robot, that costs hundreds of millions of dollars, overnight with no tools or food available. There are a lot of things wrong with this movie, but this is a standard family friendly movie that is supposed to make viewers feel good.
There were times where I thought, why would they do that, like after Miles uses A-X-L to attack a bad guy and the government agency watching starts to get jittery, the lead on the project says "no, let's see where this goes". So, the project lead of a multimillion dollar government killing machine is sitting back enjoying his creation bond with a teenager/young adult who is using it as his muscle to get what he wants?
On that note, I give this move 2 stars out of 5 due to the predictability, the safe story and the unfortunate decision to put in character lines throughout that make you cringe. It is filmed and cast well, and overall children will enjoy it, but if you are looking for depth, let A-X-L bond with someone else this summer.
