Review of A Wrinkle in Time (2018) by Juan Pablo R — 02 Jun 2018
I knew this movie would be nothing like the book based on the trailers, but it was so completely off-course I could barely recognize the book I loved from my childhood at all. The casting was great and one of the only redeeming qualities was the superb acting by everyone involved, especially the children.
They all did the best they could with what they had to work with, but the story was a mess. I understand why they did away with the flat planet and my beloved Aunt Beast (although they oddly mentioned her name in a passing image of where the father had been).
The whole thing just seemed like an excuse to use a bunch of over-the-top and unnecessary special effects. But the story moved too slowly. It was boring, despite the stunning visuals. I just couldn't figure out why so much was changed from the book for no apparent reason.
It seems like they could have at least tried to make an adaptation of the book and deviated where needed, rather than make this completely different story that only vaguely resembled the original. Just so disappointed after waiting practically my whole life for this movie.
