Review of A Wrinkle in Time (2018) by Sean G — 14 Oct 2018
"That was fine" was the consensus in my viewing party though it is fairly easy to see why this film did not work for most audiences. Unfortunately, I am going to have to wonder if the consistent flat characters and forced whimsical acting, is the fault of director Ava Duvernay. I have not seen Selma but it got lots of praise for its acting so I have my fingers crossed that the flat script etc was more at fault than the director. Duvernay is attached to DC/Warner Bros adaptation of The New Gods, a project that has the potential to break my heart, so I want her to succeed.
Chris Pine and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, as the only adult human characters in the film, are both very good and convincing. The rest of the talented cast are not given much to do besides be cute/menacing and explain the plot.
There is a lot of story and science removed from the source material yet it seems like there is not enough happening on screen to justify the run time. Unlike, say, the Harry Potter films there is not enough story in the book to justify the edits and Wrinkle in Time is a thin experience.
