Cassavetes knew exactly what he was doing while making this film: taking cinema to another dimension. The actors (memorable performances by Rowlands and Falk by the way) control the plot, Cassavetes controls their environment.

The result: the creation of a whole new and disturbing level of narrative never achieved before. Improvisation, both by the actors and by the cameraman, adds an element of true realism.Out-of-focus shots, unexplained discussions, absurd behaviors: all of them unintended things that the director uses to make his point.

Independent cinema at its best.
