Review of A Walk on the Moon (1999) by Ashley T — 28 Mar 2009
The performances here are way better than the script deserves. The nuance of the actors brings the melodrama down a notch, but it's still pretty schmaltzy. Though I love the settings of some of the key scenes -- in front of a TV showing the moon landing, Woodstock -- the obvious metaphors don't ring true to the story, and it all comes off a little coincidental and gimmicky rather than symbolic.
Definitely worth bonus points however is the soundtrack. The filmmakers thankfully avoided the songs that are so overused for movies set in this period that they have become cliché, and instead choose cult hits and a few long forgotten gems.
