Grumpy Old Men meets Wild - the muddled writing is as uninspired as the directing which may be good enough for a TV movie. Bill Bryson's book was optioned originally to reunite Robert Redford with Paul Newman for a 3rd time before delays and Newman's declining health scuppered that idea, and Redford's lacklustre performance here looks as if he really missed his old partner while it is Newman's replacement, Nick Nolte who manages to bring some life and joy to the film.

A few funny moments aside, the film is meandering, hinting at issues such as alcoholism and late-life crisis but never really gets to grips with them. An extra star if you are watching it with your grandparents, or if you are one yourself.
