Review of A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) by Steve W — 30 Sep 2014
If there's a few words to describe A Walk Among the Tombstones, they would be dark and ordinary. This is a pretty intense film with heavy material present on screen and some of your more creepier antagonists seen in a while.
The fact that yes there's a seasoned detective who's going through some troubles with alcohol and tragic past event is all been seen and done before (it's a typical stock character, but with Liam Neeson, this is one of his better performances he has given.
He's known to be the action badass from Taken and Non-stop, but here he takes a role that requires some emotion and reserve for a flawed character. The film as a whole is well made and engaging in many instances.
If you're expecting an action movie, then look somewhere else because A Walk Among the Tombstones works more of a drama mystery. It's too bad so much it can be familiar and mostly predictable (trailers didn't help out).
You go through some of the known plot points (old man meets kid although, "Astro" might be the second best actor in the movie, cop investigates, etc... And there are even scenes that could be cut out entirely to shorten the bit long run time.
So overall, not a bad movie, not a great one either. Liam Neeson keeps you engaged, you stay interested in the mystery for the most part, and the antagonists are disturbing to the core.
