Review of A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) by Crizzo L — 18 Feb 2015
Expected another action production similarly to 'Taken' or 'Unknown' but, apart from the gruff-voiced threatening phone calls, 'A Walk Among the Tombstones' delivers a different yet quite compelling crime thriller.
Gains respect for trying to make a change from the usual and it succeeds in getting audiences quickly immersed in the grisly storyline concerning Neeson and these serial killers. Unfortunately, it plays out like a detective mystery drama but fails to provide a decent amount of intelligence for the investigate elements while the early identification of the perpetrators sort of dilutes the mystery aspect.
It all becomes about how they are going to be caught and regrettably this concludes rather conventionally. David Harbour was a good choice for one of the sinister killers and Neeson suits the retired private detective protagonist but the film doesn't convey the latter character's history or intrinsic development with enough clarity and power.
Perhaps we were prevented from seeing more of his fragile side due to the efforts to maintain Neeson's tough image. The result is that 'A Walk Among the Tombstones' is a movie with great pacing and dark tone for a crime drama but one which is restricted by its lack of attention to the smaller details.
High 3 stars.
