Jeunet is the master of creating films that surpass beautiful. He is remarkably perceptive and makes keen observations about the subtleties of human personality and behavior that attach the audience to each of his characters. It's a unique but extremely effective method of character development, and is necessary in a film like this where there are almost too many characters to keep track of. It also allows the audience to directly feel exquisite hope and heartache that overwhelms Mathilde in her search to find Manech. The little tests that she creates ("If I reach the bend before the truck, Manech will return alive", "If the train reaches the tunnel or if the ticketmaster enters the compartment before I count to seven, Manech is still alive", etc.) are the moments where we fully experience her desperation (as we, like she, anticipate the completion of the 'test') and the intense relief of rejuvenated hope (if the test was passed) or devasting heartache (if the test was failed).

Although the film contains a evocative, authentic-feeling love story, it also does very well depicting the horrors and helplessness of the Great War. Unlike most period films, it seems genuine.

And, of course, Jeunet's films are always aesthetically stunning and perfectly cast, and this film is no exception. If you're looking for a film to move you, A Very Long Engagement is a very good choice.
