Review of A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2011) by Samuel F — 20 Jul 2013
While certainly not as good as the first one, this 'holiday special' mocks 3-D by over-using it intentionally, which is itself a clever and funny thing to behold. Other than this, the movie is largely typical for stoner comedies including a short clay-motion section and a gratuitous nude nun shower scene. The plot plods along like a stoned freshman in Calculus. Plenty of race-based humor too. But again, all in good fun, if not necessarily good taste.
Trejo adds weight to the movie, while Cho displays better acting chops than in the first movie. Penn an Harris conduct their roles without improvement, but their performances are fine for this type of movie.
In short, this is funny to a sect of the populous very specifically drawn to these types of movies to begin with. Enjoyable, though if you watch it in 2D it looses much of its value as the whole movie is a joke about 3D that only works if watched in 3D.
