Review of A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) by Louisa M — 25 Mar 2009
By exploiting the recent popular appeal of the Asian horror genre and using it's standard themes and characters for other purposes, Kim Jee-woon turns his achingly beautiful A Tale of Two Sisters, a touching story about a guilt-ridden girl who invents her own ghosts to escape painful past events, into something more than just an excercise in style.
Kim also obviously has grasped the symbolic significance, from a strictly gothic perspective, of large ominous buildings with an abundance of rooms. These sets look absolutely great, and so does the cinematography.
As far as acting goes, A Tale of Two Sisters is all Yeom Jeong-ah's show, for once given a part worthy her skills.
