Review of A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) by Paul R — 31 Oct 2012
A Tale of Two Sisters is a dark psychological drama that feeds the viewer enough fear and anxiety that it very quickly becomes an intriguing and intense psychological Horror. It oozes suspense and is layered with so many questions you are left on the edge of your seat in dumbfounded fear. It's a difficult film to review without spoilers so lets focus on a couple of its great points.
The two sisters are played with amazing talent from two young actors. Particular praise for Su-Jeong Lim who also did a great job in "I'm a Cyborg, but that's ok", her intense and very real performance gave further credibility to the film ensuring every moment of fear is that little bit more intense.
This film is a visual treat. Each shot is put together with great skill. The direction and cinematography are second to none. Great angles and colour are found within the house which seemed so rich in it's design it almost became a character itself. Darkness seemed to creep in every shot even those that are bathed in light from a window. Combined with the ultra apt score adding just that little bit more creepiness, this film is extremely well balanced.
Overall A Tale of Two Sisters is a triumph. It's an eerie, sometimes confusing but ultimately rewarding mystery packed full of amazing ideas with a superb story. If you like horror - you'll love this, but it's not just for the horror fans, if you like your films intelligent with quality direction and vision - stick this on your list.
