Review of A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) by Beesix A — 09 Feb 2013
Another Asian horror flick with a convoluted sense of storytelling. We all fear the unknown, and that's exactly what the plot is for a large part of this film: unknown. This is a huge cliche in Asian horror films and the biggest part of why I don't enjoy them.
I'm happy to wait for a mystery to unfold, but only if you give me something to do in the meantime besides glimpse at blood, corpses, and dead birds. Things need to make some sense beforehand, there needs to be pacing, and I want to be shown not told what happens.
At the end of the film, they blow their load and literally explain what has been going on for the entirety of it. And you NEED the explanation, because it is utterly nonsensical before that. I give it three stars because the imagery in the film is quite scary without being cheesy or ridiculous and the plot wouldn't be half bad if somebody else had directed it.
