Review of A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) by Baurushan J — 20 Jul 2013
This movie is inspired on the ancient Korean folktale "Janghwa and Hongryeon" which are the name of two sisters. After their mother dies, their father Bae re-marries a cruel woman. She kept her hatred to herself and they never told the truth to their dad.
She had three sons and the eldest son murdered both sisters in a lake by drowning them both. Since then, every new mayor tried to rule the govern but none remained alive until one new brave mayor faced the ghost sisters himself and demanded the sisters who they were and what their problem was.
They said that they wanted their stepmother and her eldest son to be dead which is why they killed every previous mayor because none of them believed their life story. As demanded, the brave mayor sentenced both the stepmother and the eldest son to death and the two sisters finally rested in peace.
In this modernised film version however, the story is about two sisters named Su-mi and Su-yeon whose mother dies. Therefore, their father Mu-Hyun remarries a cruel woman named Eun-joo whom the girls obviously despise.
Strange, violent visions begin to disturb Su-mi and she becomes convinced that Eun-joo is keeping a dark secret from the family. The twist ending is whilst doesn't stay true to the folktale, it's still perfect.
As you know, this was remade in 2009 known as The Uninvited and that movie sucked because it doesn't know the legendary history behind this movie and it was only made to get a cheap scare and a quick buck.
True Story. There are many films that show us which horror is supernatural and which horror is psychological and this is the movie that perfected that art: A Korean horror movie titled A Tale Of Two Sisters that gets a weak 10/10.
