Review of A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) by Wes S — 09 Oct 2011
My poor heart has tortured again by Kim Jee-Woon. Nothing to worry it is a good thing. Delivering an emotionally devastating film, that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Normal I like to write a little story on how I came to findings this film and I will but it can be read in different reviews I have done such as I saw The Devil. So I will keep it short. I had just watch The Good The Bad and The Weird (the spelling of weird always messes me up I think it should be IE not EI),and then found out that this man made I saw the devil a movie I really wanted to see and then on his movie list I noticed A Tale of Two Sister. I want to movie stop with this information and was determined to get these movies.....
When in there a worker Dave was there (Dave is sooooooo kool like he is a major Bad-ass). As I went to the new releases section I had found I Saw the Devil. Then I thought of two things, 1st movie stop does not update the new movies often by which I mean movies will stay in that section for a rather long time. 2nd "Oh yeah I came here for a tale of two sisters....I shall find it" (yes I realize I said thought above) So I bolt for the foreign section pushing poor people with probably the same dream as me. Even though they were hold such movies as Transformers and Meet the parents the crowd that typically goes for these Indy films.Sooooo yea back to the story. After my gentle work through the empty store I was searching and searching and realized that it was not there. So I confronted Dave and he did some clicking on the computer and said that there are 2 copies in the store...
So Dave went into the back and said it goes on sale tomo but I can sell it to you now if you want. I was already there so I just paid the extra two dollars... I consulted AW and we said we would watch I saw the devil as a group. So that left me with A tale of two sisters. I was excited and watched it that night.
It is about two sisters who go to visit their father and step mother. The step mother is crazy, due to some tragic events the big sister must protect the little sister at all costs from the step mother. That is the basic plot...
Now on to the scenery and what not. I can some it up quick and say it is one most appealing parts of the movie. The use of colors is beautiful one example would be the distant color per room.
The story itself is creepy yet down to earth. Absolutely appealing. Now the movie is not perfect.... This makes me sad that I feel oblagated to write this. Now what the material that is there is great but I feel that it needed some more depth to it or have some more twists or even gore. Peraps that is what the director want a less violent movie but I this he should just stick to what he does best violence and engaging stories. Besides the lack of depth in the middle the movie is close to perfect.
Final Verdict: Kim, you are so talented and I can't wait to see a bittersweet life. I have not seen anything less than great from you sooooo what I am terribly trying to say is keep up the great work. I would highly suggest you see this movie and not the American remake, The Uninvited.... This is how I will describe the movie better bad.... a tone down version of this, but it has two benifits to it first to a younger crowd you can start to improve your movie choices and also when your older you can see the real deal. Second Emily Browning <3 Heart! ummmmm yea.....
85% out of 100%.
